According to legend, a carp that could swim upstream and leap up the falls of the Yellow River at the Dragon Gate (lóng mén) would be transformed into a dragon. Hence, the idiom 鲤跃龙门 (yú yuè lóng mén) is often used to encourage one to achieve success through hard work and perseverance.
